Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French headed down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is derived from the name of the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and across the country. A good many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he developed the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
