Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about one hundred years old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French moved down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
