Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps developed from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French moved down south and found safety in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he established the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
