Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French headed down south and discovered refuge in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. Many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he developed the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
