Learn to Play Craps – Pointers and Tactics: The Past of Craps

Be smart, play clever, and learn how to play craps the correct way!

Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about 100 years old. Modern craps come about from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. A good many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he designed the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
